Long-Term Disability

Details on LTD Plan

The Missionary Church offers Long-Term Disability Insurance to its full-time employees through MMA (Mennonite Mutual Aid and North American Benefits Company.) This coverage is designed to provide a reduced, but continuing, income for each participant in the unfortunate instance of becoming totally disabled. The plan assists the denomination and churches in meeting a moral obligation and enables participating employees to continue being financially responsible.

Eligibility: All full-time employees of the Missionary Church (working at least 30 hours per week on a regular basis) may participate. This includes ministers, associates, assistants, missionaries, and lay personnel.

Disability/Disabled: Means that because of injury or sickness:

   1. The claimant cannot perform each of the material duties of his/her regular occupation; and

   2. After benefits have been paid for 24 months, the claimant cannot perform each of the material duties of any gainful occupation for which he or she is reasonably fitted by training, education, or experience.

Benefits: Sixty-six and two-thirds percent of basic monthly earnings to a maximum benefit of $7,000 per month. The amount of benefit will coordinate with any primary benefits from Social Security, any "retirement plan" benefits which are for disability, and any eligible Workers Compensation benefits.

Waiting Period: Ninety consecutive days (three months) of disability from injury or sickness for which no benefit is payable. This period begins on the first day of disability.

Benefit Period: Disability from injury or sickness to age 65. If still actively at work within the denomination after age 65, and the participant becomes disabled, there is a decreasing duration of benefits from two years down to one year, depending on age.

Are Benefits Taxable? Yes, Social Security (FICA) tax must be paid on LTD benefits as these payments are replacement income.

Survivor Benefits: If an employee dies after being disabled for six months or longer while receiving benefits, his/her eligible survivor or estate will receive three times the insured's gross monthly benefit.

Billing/Payment: The home office will bill each church in advance for the quarterly premium due. That local church will be responsible for payment regardless of any arrangement between the church and its staff.
