Historically the Missionary Church has been a rural, Midwestern denomination with a strong focus on overseas missions. In the past twenty years we have moved from that comfort zone into a domestic missions emphasis by planting more churches in large metro areas (e.g., San Diego, Seattle, Charlotte, Orlando, etc.) and among different ethnic groups (e.g., Brazilians, Haitians, Latinos, Koreans, etc.). But until recently there has not been a concerted effort to crack the blue state metropolises on the east coast. But imagine the ripple effect on the entire world if a world-class city (some experts say there are only five world-class cities) like New York City came to Christ.
Jeff Getz is a Missionary Church guy who understands and breathes the blue state culture of New York City. God has given him a passion for the boroughs of this great metropolis and provided networks of people with similar passion. Some have sought to plant churches but were unable to leap the triple hurdles of ultra-secularism, high cost of living, and challenging societal realities. Jeff recognizes the pitfalls that have thwarted many of good heart and intentions and has slowly laid the foundation for future ministry through partnerships with other New York-based ministries. In addition, his family (wife, Christina, and their three daughters, Chelsea, Amanda and Kendra) have the same strong ownership to "seek the peace" of New York City. (Jeremiah 24:4-7) He's not going at this alone.
Over the next few months we will try to paint a picture of the challenge and vision of reaching New York City. Later we will segue to other major cities, such as Boston, and spotlight their challenges and what God is doing there. We haven't forgotten our roots, but God has lifted our eyes toward cities that will impact far beyond our shores.
